IN 2006, after a career in the Navy and as a water treatment operator at Des Moines Water Works, Moe Cason began competing in—and winning—barbecue competitions. Today, he has faced off against some of the most famous pitmasters in the United States. He participates in competitions around the world, hosts barbecue classes, and has received three perfect scores for his chicken, pork ribs, and pork shoulder.
He appeared on BBQ Pitmasters regularly from 2009 to 2018, and has also been featured on Destination America’s BBQ Pit Wars and the Food Network’s The Kitchen and Chopped. He also appeared in Netflix’s On a Wing and a Prayer and Appetite for Adventure. His National Geographic series, World of Flavor With Big Moe Cason, debuted in 2023.
He lives in Des Moines, Iowa, with his wife and four daughters.
